Learn CPR to become a lifesaver during emergencies, advised by a heart specialist in Kolkata.
Learning CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) is indeed a valuable skill that can potentially save lives in emergencies involving cardiac arrest. Here’s a basic overview of CPR:
- Assess the Situation: Ensure the area is safe for you and the victim. Check if the victim is responsive and breathing normally.
- Call for Help: If the victim is unresponsive and not breathing or not breathing normally, call emergency services immediately or ask someone else to do so.
- Perform Chest Compressions:
- Place the heel of one hand on the center of the victim’s chest (usually between the nipples).
- Place the other hand on top of the first hand and interlock your fingers.
- Keep your elbows straight and position your shoulders directly over your hands.
- Push down hard and fast, aiming for a depth of about 2 inches (5 centimeters) and at a rate of about 100 to 120 compressions per minute. Let the chest rise completely between compressions.
- Give Rescue Breaths (if you are trained and comfortable):
- Open the victim’s airway using the head-tilt, chin-lift maneuver.
- Pinch the victim’s nose shut and cover their mouth with yours, creating an airtight seal.
- Give two rescue breaths, each lasting about one second and causing the chest to rise visibly.
- Continue with cycles of 30 chest compressions followed by 2 rescue breaths.
- Continue CPR: Keep performing CPR until emergency medical personnel take over or the victim starts to show signs of life, such as breathing, moving, or blinking.
It’s essential to receive proper training in CPR from certified instructors to ensure that you perform it effectively and safely. Many organizations offer CPR training courses, including the American Red Cross, the American Heart Association, and St. John Ambulance, among others. CPR training typically covers both adult and pediatric CPR techniques, as well as the use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) if available.
Remember, the quicker CPR is initiated, the better the chances of survival for the victim. By learning CPR, you’re equipping yourself with the skills to potentially make a life-saving difference in an emergency situation.
